Schellenbach and Cunniff, who met while Schellenbach was drummer for the Beastie Boys whom Cunniff was interviewing for her zine, released a side project under the name Kostars in 1996. They performed hip hop and dance inspired alternative music. The members were Kate Schellenbach (drums), Jill Cunniff (vocals, bass), Gabby Glaser (vocals, guitar), and Vivian Trimble (keyboards).
