As of 2004, Kreuk is dating her Legend of Earthsea co-star, Canadian actor Mark Hildreth. Lopez had to return to Mexico after her father was released from the hospital, but she flew back to Puerto Rico everytime that the opera's filming schedule allowed her to. It airs on December 13, 2004. Her father recuperated, but only five percent of his heart is currently working. The two-part miniseries, filmed in Vancouver, was directed by Rob Lieberman and co-produced by Lawrence Bender of Pulp Fiction fame. Lopez was given immediate permission to travel to Puerto Rico and be with her father for as long as she needed. Her character, Tenar, is the pupil of High Priestess Thar of the Tombs of Atuan (played by Isabella Rossellini) and also the love interest of Ashmore's character. During the recording of that soap opera, her father suffered a heart attack and had to be hospitalized and operated.

Because of this, there is a claim in court against the Fonsi brothers. The executives at Neutrogena decided to make her the cover girl for their new worldwide ad campaign; in this regard Kreuk followed in the footsteps of fellow teen stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Mandy Moore. López also participated in Mujer, Casos de la Vida Real, where she played a victim of rape that later turned lesbian. Originally, Kreuk was not so sure about auditioning for the Lana role, as the character was to be a gorgeous, popular cheerleader and so she assumed that the part would be that of a shallow "idiot". However, upon reading the "graveyard scene" from the pilot, she was so impressed that when she was offered the role, she immediately accepted it. Her private life has become a favorite subject of paparazzi and gossip magazines, and her breakup from actor Mauricio Islas was well published.

Gough and Millar called Kreuk to the WB's studios in Burbank, California to audition for the role of Clark Kent's pre-Lois Lane love, Lana Lang. She travelled to Mexico next, after the invitation by the producers to try out there, and became a superstar in that country as well, working in many top soap operas, including the national super hit Amigas y Rivales. The program (which was slated to be shot in Vancouver) was to revolve around the life of teenager Clark Kent, alias Superboy. After reaching the age of majority, she came back, participating in several plays at Puerto Rico's Teatro Tapia, San Juan's premier and oldest theater, and getting the attention of Mexican producers. After Snow White, Kreuk's agent sent an audition tape to movie screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who at the time were putting together the cast of a show they had created for the WB Network entitled Smallville. A short, two chapter appearance on Vivir Para Ti followed in 1983, and after that, López decided to dedicate herself to her studies. It aired on ABC on March 17, 2002. Lopez became a household name.

The film, shot in Vancouver, also starred actress Miranda Richardson. She was 9 then, and was given one of the most important roles of the story. After shooting the first season of Edgemont (a teen soap opera set at a Vancouver-area high school) and getting herself an agent, Kreuk landed the lead role of Snow White in a TV movie entitled Snow White: The Fairest of Them All. WAPA-TV next chose her to play Iris Chacon and Daniel Guerrero's daughter in Yo Se Que Mentia. Much to her surprise, she won the part. Her talent indicated a future superstar. Kreuk, who had no previous experience in acting other than musicals at her high school, was convinced to audition for the role by her drama teacher. Adamari López (born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, May 18, 1971) started her career alongside legendary Puerto Rican actress Johanna Rosaly and Venezuelan singer José Luis Rodríguez, El Puma, at the age of 6 in the Telemundo Canal 2 production of the Cristina Bazan soap opera.

Kreuk was planning to study either psychology, environmental science, or forensic science at Simon Fraser University when a casting director for the CBC TV series Edgemont called her high school, looking for an "exotic"-looking girl to play the part of Laurel Yeung on the Vancouver-shot show. She also has a younger sister, Justine. Her father, Peter Kreuk, is of Dutch ancestry and her mother, Deanna Che, is of Chinese ancestry; both are landscape architects. Kreuk was born in Vancouver, British Columbia.
