She is a graduate of Yale University. Recently Alley has confided that she has not have sex in 4 and 1/2 years, due to the fact she didn't want to have 'fat sex'. Jennifer Beals is biracial, with an African-American father (deceased since she was 10) and an Irish mother. She is currently filming a series for the cable station Showtime, called Fat Actress, which deals with the travails of an actress whose career suffers due to her problems with her weight. Beals also stars in Showtime Network's The L Word. Despite her weight, high or low, Alley remains in demand for TV and movie roles. She has participated in little more than 50 movies.

Her weight yo-yos from high to low as she struggles and then brings her weight under control, only to lose it again and gain weight. Beals has since starred in a list of lesser-known films and independent projects. Alley has struggled with obesity for years. Her career was affected by scandal shortly after, however, when it was revealed that some of the scenes in that movie where athletics were required were actually performed not by Beals herself, but by doubles. Her NBC TV sitcom Veronica's Closet ran for three seasons. Flashdance made Beals a Hollywood star and made her a household name. She played neurotic corporate executive Rebecca Howe on hit TV series Cheers, (replacing Shelley Long,) and later starred in the Look Who's Talking movie series with fellow Scientologist, John Travolta. Beals is a former teen model who is probably better known for her role as Alex in the 1983 movie Flashdance.

Alley also co-starred in a short-lived secret agent television series, Masquerade. Jennifer Beals (born December 19, 1963) is an American actress.
