Kathryn Grayson

She was nominated for an Emmy in 1955 for her performance as a blind girl in General Electric Theater's Shadow On The Heart.. She was made a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1975 . She left the movies in 1956 for the stage and fulfilled her dream of being in opera. She won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1958 for the film Separate Tables. She also played Magnolia in the 1951 version of Show Boat. She was nominated again in 1966 for A Man for All Seasons. Some consider her role as Lili Vanessi in Kiss Me, Kate as her best. She was nominated for an Oscar in 1938 for her first major film role in Pygmalion.

She started out with dreams of being in opera, but MGM scooped her up to be in films. Her performance in Love on the Dole attracted the attention of George Bernard Shaw, and he cast her in several of his plays, including Saint Joan, Pygmalion and Major Barbara. The petite soprano was one of MGM Studios' top sopranos of the 1940s & 1950s. She first found success in the stage version of Love on the Dole, and in 1936 married the author Ronald Gow. She has one daughter. Her professional debut as an actress was in repertory at Manchester. She married twice, first to actor John Shelton, second to actor/singer Johnnie Johnston. She was born Wendy Margaret Hiller in Cheshire in England, daughter of Frank Watkin Hiller and Marie Stone.
