She is the mother of Laura Dern, with whom she co-starred in the films Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose. She was usually considered the best of the three original lead actresses, and she was the only one with prior acting qualifications. She was born Rose Diane Lanier in Meridian, Mississippi and raised Catholic. She had earlier played a year-long role in the soap opera Dark Shadows in 1970 as Daphne Harridge.
