Joe Flanigan

He currently leads the military force attached to the Atlantis Expedition as Major John Sheppard on Stargate Atlantis. He died of Lung Cancer on Christmas Day in 1997. Flanigan is married to painter Katherine Flanigan. In his later life, Denver Pyle played mostly cameo television roles and retired from full time acting. On the advice of some of his friends he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse and later moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting as a career. He became involved in television in the 1970s, and in 1979 was cast as the immortal “Uncle Jesse” in the series The Dukes of Hazzard. After graduation he pursued a writing career, working briefly for several New York City magazines. After the close of the Second World War, Denver Pyle began his film career and starred in several motion pictures throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

He later attended the University of Colorado where he apppeared in Coriolanus and studied in Paris. Denver Pyle’s statements were not resolved prior to his death, and his exact status of military service remains unclear to this day. At the age of 14 he attended a boarding school in Ojai, California where he appeared in the school's production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Denver Pyle would claim in later life that he was a Navy veteran, who had been wounded in action at Guadalcanal, however the National Personnel Records Center stated in 1991 that there was no evidence that Denver Pyle had ever served on active duty in the United States Navy. Joe Flanigan grew up on a small ranch near Reno, Nevada in the United States. He worked as a drummer and band member until the start of the Second World War, when he applied to join the Merchant Marine. Joe Flanigan is a prolific television actor who has long-running guest roles on numerous television series, including Profiler, First Monday, Sisters and The Force. After graduating from high school he briefly attended college before dis-enrolling to pursue a career in show business.
