Jean Stapleton (born Jeanne Murray on January 19, 1923 in New York City) is an American actress.

She best known for her portrayal of the long-suffering yet devoted wife and mother Edith Bunker on the popular and groundbreaking 1970s sitcom All in the Family. Her awards for the show include three Emmys and three Golden Globes.

Stapleton is not related to Maureen Stapleton.

She has also acted on Broadway (Damn Yankees, Bells Are Ringing) and in many other stage productions, as well as acting in made-for-TV movies and feature films such as Cold Turkey.
