Since Gunsmoke ended, Arness has continued to perform primarily in western-themed movies and television series, including How the West Was Won, and five made-for-television Gunsmoke reunion movies between 1987 and 1994. Beatty was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Network (1976). In fact, Wayne recommended Arness for the role of Matt Dillon. He is probably most recognized from his appearances as Lex Luthor's henchman Otis in Superman (1978), and as rape victim Bobby Trippe in Deliverance (1972), which was his first film. He was a close personal friend of John Wayne's and co-starred in a film with him called Big Jim McClain. Ned Beatty (born Louisville, Kentucky July 6, 1937) is an American character actor, who has appeared in over 100 films.
