Matarazzo recently came out of the closet as a lesbian in the New York Times; she unassumingly referenced her "girlfriend" and then clarified the meaning. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a SAG award for her performances in Far From Heaven in 2003. Her breakthrough role was as a geeky girl in the movie Welcome to the Dollhouse.
