The band regularly updates a road journal on their website (http://www.guster.com/), and can often be found after shows for autographs. Information Society has no plans to work on new material. The characteristic usually first brought up about the band is their choice of instruments: two members playing acoustic guitars, and one member playing drums and various percussion. One notable instance of such play with computer-related materials included both the complete music video collection to date contained on a second CD provided with Don't Be Afraid and a carefully-orchestrated digital scavenger hunt culminating in the discovery of a bonus track called "White Roses". A live album, Guster on Ice, compiled from two shows at Portland, Maine in December, 2003, was released in 2004. The fourth album, Don't Be Afraid, done by Kurt Harland alone, is more industrial-driven. The band released their fourth album, Keep It Together in 2003, with the first single, "Amsterdam", getting significant play on the radio. Their first single "Peace & Love Inc." reached #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart. The band also released their first video, a song from L&GF entitled "Fa Fa". The third release, Peace & Love, Inc., proved to be more powerful, although their spotlight had vanished.

With the backing of a major label, the band appeared on late night shows like David Letterman. The car sported a functioning ranging laser, among other unusual features. A year later, the band released the album Lost and Gone Forever, produced by Steve Lillywhite. Kurt was also the owner of the heavily-modified art car featured on the cover of Hack, eventually sold to a friend at Burning Man in the mid 1990s. In 1998 the band signed to Sire Records and re-released Goldfly. The second release, Hack, wasn't as powerful, but had a small hit with "Think". Shortly after the release of Parachute another artist called Gus signed a deal with a major record company, forcing the band to rename themselves "Guster." In 1996, the band independently recorded their second album, Goldfly, releasing it early the next year. The disc was one of the few to use CD+G, which included digital graphics on the compact disc version in addition to the music.

The band independently recorded their first album in 1994, entitled Parachute, while still in college. The self-titled debut album Information Society (1988) also had another hit, "Walking Away", and a cover from ABBA's "Lay All Your Love On Me". A year later, after writing a few songs in their dorm rooms, the band named themselves "Gus" and booked their first gig.
