She is perhaps best known to modern audiences as the wife of Miles Archer in The Maltese Falcon. Hathaway's desire to break out of her Princess Diaries image parallels that of her co-star, Julie Andrews, who went to the (then) extreme length of going topless in the film S.O.B. in order to break away from the image she created for herself in her 1960s musicals. She also appeared in Madame X in 1937, The Roaring Twenties in 1939, The Way of All Flesh in 1946 and The Best Years of Our Lives in 1951. More recently, Hathaway filmed a supporting role in Brokeback Mountain, a Western film with gay overtones. In 1936 she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for Valiant Is the Word for Carrie. Hathaway downplays the film's explicitness in a late 2004 interview for Ingenue magazine. Born Gladys Anna Clare in Patten, Maine, she starred on the stage in the 1920s, although she had made several films in the early part of that decade. But it wasn't until 1934 that she started becoming noticed for her film work. According to early reviews, Hathaway and most of the rest of the cast appear nude and engage in simulated sex in several segments of the raunchy film, although it remains to be seen whether these elements of the film will remain intact for general release.

However, the role was later given to new-comer Emmy Rossum. She also had a notable role in the 2002 film production of Nicholas Nickleby, and a starring role in 2004's Ella Enchanted.
