Plot

A murdered man comes back as a ghost to try to prevent his girlfriend from being killed. He communicates with her through a con artist posing as a psychic who, as it turns out, can actually hear the dead and be possessed by them.

Awards

It won Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Whoopi Goldberg) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. It was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Music, Original Score and Best Picture.

It won Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Whoopi Goldberg) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. The Goodbye Girl was subsequently developed into a 1993 Broadway musical. He communicates with her through a con artist posing as a psychic who, as it turns out, can actually hear the dead and be possessed by them. The title song, performed by David Gates, was a pop hit. A murdered man comes back as a ghost to try to prevent his girlfriend from being killed. At 30, Dreyfuss was the youngest actor ever to win the Best Actor Oscar (this record has since been surpassed by Adrien Brody, who was 29 when he won his award for The Pianist.).
