Fairuza Balk

Fairuza Alejandra Balk (born May 21, 1974) is an American film actress, probably most famous for her participation in the 1996 movie The Craft. She is a native of Point Reyes, California.

Legend has it that she was named Fairuza because her father, an expert in Persian culture, exclaimed that word the moment she was born, Fairuza meaning Turquoise in Persian, and Balk's eyes being of that color. Soon after her parents split, Fairuza became a world traveller. Raised for the first part of her life in San Francisco, she and her mother moved to Vancouver when Fairuza counted nine years of age. At the age of 11 she moved to London, where she attented various prestigious ballet and acting schools. At that age also, she was picked by the Walt Disney Company to star in the movie Return to Oz. In 1988 she moved to Paris to do more work as an actress, and by 1989 she was back in Vancouver, where she began to attend high school. Soon, however, she decided to take correspondence courses instead.

Then she went back to Hollywood, where she began to be more and more noticed as an actress. In 1992 she was awarded an Independent Spirit Award as Best Actress for her performance in Gas Food Lodging.

Balk was soon cast in The Craft, in which she forms a teenage coven along with Neve Campbell, Rachel True and Robin Tunney. This was particularly appropriate casting, as Fairuza is a wiccan in real life, and she owns a store dedicated to that religion, named Panpipes Magickal.

Balk also had a memorable performance as a neo-nazi opposite Edward Norton in American History X.

Balk has been romantically linked to British actor David Thewlis. She also dated Marilyn Manson, but they have since split.

She also dated Marilyn Manson, but they have since split. She later appeared in the film "Biker Boyz". Balk has been romantically linked to British actor David Thewlis. In 2000 she appeared in the movie High Fidelity. Balk also had a memorable performance as a neo-nazi opposite Edward Norton in American History X. Soon she started dating yoga instructor Brian Kest, with whom she had another child, and in 1998 she had a supporting role in Enemy of the State with Will Smith. This was particularly appropriate casting, as Fairuza is a wiccan in real life, and she owns a store dedicated to that religion, named Panpipes Magickal. Soon after she changed her name legally, deciding to keep using her birth name on the productions she participated in.

Balk was soon cast in The Craft, in which she forms a teenage coven along with Neve Campbell, Rachel True and Robin Tunney. She and Kravitz divorced in 1993 and she began to accept jobs on straight-to-video releases and made-for-TV movies. In 1992 she was awarded an Independent Spirit Award as Best Actress for her performance in Gas Food Lodging. (It seemed to fare well in the ratings without her.) Her character was brought back to The Cosby Show, but as she continued to behave unprofessionally she was eventually fired. Then she went back to Hollywood, where she began to be more and more noticed as an actress. She was constantly late (or did not show up) for tapings of her sitcom, and eventually she was removed from it entirely. In 1988 she moved to Paris to do more work as an actress, and by 1989 she was back in Vancouver, where she began to attend high school. Soon, however, she decided to take correspondence courses instead. After giving birth to daughter Zoe in 1989 Bonet's erratic professional behavior began to worsen.

At that age also, she was picked by the Walt Disney Company to star in the movie Return to Oz. Although posing naked gave her name much international exposure, it did not help her career in the movies very much. At the age of 11 she moved to London, where she attented various prestigious ballet and acting schools. In 1988, she posed naked for Rolling Stone Magazine, causing a large controversy and serious concerns from Cosby, who treated her and the rest of the actors who played his kids on the show as if they were his real-life kids. Raised for the first part of her life in San Francisco, she and her mother moved to Vancouver when Fairuza counted nine years of age. The film did not help her movie-acting career and she returned to the television world with another Cosby-produced show, A Different World. In 1987 she married singer Lenny Kravitz. Soon after her parents split, Fairuza became a world traveller. Her explicit sex scenes in the film drew concern from the producers of The Cosby Show, who felt it detracted from her character's image.

Legend has it that she was named Fairuza because her father, an expert in Persian culture, exclaimed that word the moment she was born, Fairuza meaning Turquoise in Persian, and Balk's eyes being of that color. Her appearance there drew some controversy and some scenes had to be edited for the American public. She is a native of Point Reyes, California. In 1987 she accepted the role of Epiphany in the movie Angel Heart opposite Mickey Rourke, directed by Alan Parker. Fairuza Alejandra Balk (born May 21, 1974) is an American film actress, probably most famous for her participation in the 1996 movie The Craft. Bonet was known to have a wild side, like her character of "Denise" in the Cosby show. What Is It? (2003). She is best known for being on The Cosby Show alongside Bill Cosby and Tempestt Bledsoe, among others, but Bonet actually began acting when she was 11, attending many auditions and participating in several television commercials before she became a star.
