Eva Marie Saint

She has appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies, and won an Emmy in 1990 for the mini-series People Like Us. Her brother, a producer of Kannada films, Amarnath, also died in the accident. Because of the second-rate film roles that came her way in the 1970s, Saint returned to television and the stage in the 1980s. She was on her way to Andhra Pradesh to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party for the elections. Her best known films were in the early years of her career: A Hatful of Rain (1957) with Don Murray, North by Northwest (1959) with Cary Grant, and Exodus (1960) with Paul Newman. Soundarya died on April 17, 2004 when the four-seater plane Cessna 180 caught fire immediately after take off. Her first film role was in On the Waterfront (1954) with Marlon Brando, for which she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Soundarya married her maternal uncle in April, 2003.

She studied acting at Bowling Green University, and did some work in radio and television before winning the Drama Critics Award for her stage role in A Trip to Bountiful (1953). The film won Karnataka state awards for Best Actress, Best Film and Best Cinematography and was featured in five international film festivals. Saint was born in Newark, New Jersey, USA. She also produced and acted in a Kannada film Dweepa, with Girish Kasaravalli as director. She played the blonde, graceful leading lady in many films, starting in the 1950s.
