It replaced the BMW E28 in 1988 and was replaced by the E39 in 1996, although E34s were still being sold in 1996. BMW 525i, E34 body style BMW 525i, Touring versionE34 Models
The European marketWhile Europe was given a large selection of engine choices and combinations, the North American market was more limited. While North America received only the 525i, 525i Touring, 535i, 530i, 530i Touring, 540i, and the M5, the European market also got the E34 518i, 520i, 6-cylinder 530i, and diesel 525td/s. The cars were also available earlier than in America. Introduction in North AmericaIn 1989 the E34 succeded the BMW E28 with two models. The 525i used the BMW M20 engine as was used on the BMW E30 325i; the 535i used the larger M30 engine. The cars were a blend of BMW tradition and modern technology. BMW's traditional FR layout and straight-6 were used, providing the smooth engine and optimal weight distribution BMW customers had come to expect. The E34 also had a much stiffer body and was streamlined than its predecessor, looking very much like the BMW E32 7-series. The E34 was among the most reliable luxury cars on the market, earning the best-in-class reliability rating from intellichoice in 1991. It is still considered one of the most reliable BMWs made. 525iThe 525i was built throughout the E34 production, and in 1992 was offered as a wagon (touring version) in America. Also in 1991, the engine was switched from the single overhead cam M20 engine to the double overhead cam M50 engine, raising power to 189 horsepower (141 kW). A further revision of the 525i engine took place in 1993, when VANOS was added to the M50 engine which was designated the M50TU. 525iXThe 525iX was the only four-wheel drive version in the E34 series. It was available both as a sedan and a wagon (touring version). It features a computer-controlled rear and middle differentials. The middle differential normally divides 36% torque to the front axle and 64% to the rear axle, but can alter the ratio according to driving conditions (in case one of the axles starts to slip). 535iThe E34 535i was introduced in Europe as a 1988 model but was not available in North America until 1989. Production of the E34 535i was discontinued in North America in 1993, replaced by the 530i and 540i models. Despite the 535i designation, the M30 engine found in the E34 535i was actually 3430cc. Only 5% of total production 535i's were 5-speeds. The car can get 14-17 miles per U.S. gallon (17 to 14 L/100 km) city and 23-29 mpg (U.S.) (10 to 8 L/100 km) highway. The 535i was one of the safest cars on the road during its production, providing airbags, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, and a very rigid body structure to protect occupants in the event of an accident. The 60-0 mph (97 to 0 km/h) stopping distance of 130 feet (40 m) was the best of any production sedan in 1990. The interior features standard leather seating and door panel inserts. The dash and doors are covered in matching vinyl along with chrome trim to add to the luxury. PerformanceWith 5-Speed Getrag manual transmission:

530iThe 530i replaced the 535i model in 1994, switching from an inline-6 to the new BMW M60, a DOHC, 3.0 liter V8 engine producing 218 hp (160 kW). It was also offered in a touring version. 540iIn 1993 BMW added a 4 liter V8 to the 5-Series lineup. It was available in both sedan and touring models. Its large, torquey engine, upgraded brakes, and optional 6-speed transmission (offered in 1995) made it very competitive in the sports sedan market. Both the E34 BMW 530i and 540i shared the M60 engine, which used Nikasil bore linings. In America, this made both susceptible to premature engine wear, as high sulfur content in some fuels resulted in deterioration of the linings. BMW then introduced Alusil linings for this engine, which solved the problem. There was a rare 540i Sport model built in 1995. This is not just the usual "sport package" which includes firmer suspension and sport seats, but a 540i that used many parts from the M5, but not the engine and transmission. 200 of these cars were built, 135 with a 6-speed manual and the remainder with the automatic transmission. Canada also got a special version – the M540i, which was similar to the American 540i Sport but had even more M5 parts, such as 345 mm floating front rotors, 18 inch wheels, and various trim pieces. Only 20 of these cars were built, all with a manual transmission. The normal 540i had 302mm x 28 mm (11.9 in) fixed rotors front and 300 mm x 20 mm fixed rotors back. All version had the same 0-60 mph time of 6.4 seconds, and could get 14-17 miles per U.S. gallon (17 to 14 L/100 km) city and 23-29 mpg (U.S.) (10 to 8 L/100 km) highway. M5The M5 version of the E34 was produced from 1989-1995. It featured a highly tuned straight-6 engine, originally a 3.6 L, but later increased to 3.8 L. All 5-Series models featured the following :. In early 2003, Fender Musical Instruments Corporation made a deal with Gretsch, and began manufacturing and distributing new Gretsch guitars. It featured a highly tuned straight-6 engine, originally a 3.6 L, but later increased to 3.8 L. In recent years, Fender Musical Instruments Corporation has branched out into making and selling acoustic guitars, and has purchased a number of other instrument firms, including the Guild Guitar Company, the Sunn Amplifier Company, and other brands such as SWR bass amplifiers. The M5 version of the E34 was produced from 1989-1995. Fender guitars have been the instrument of choice for hundreds of noted artists including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ritchie Blackmore, and Keith Richards. gallon (17 to 14 L/100 km) city and 23-29 mpg (U.S.) (10 to 8 L/100 km) highway. On nearly every stage in the country, small or large, featuring blues, country and western or rock and roll, it is common to see a Fender guitar or bass in the hands of one or more of the musicians, amplified through a Fender amplifier. All version had the same 0-60 mph time of 6.4 seconds, and could get 14-17 miles per U.S. The core of its instrument line, the Tele, Strat, P-Bass, and J-Bass, remains largely unchanged from the 1950s and 1960s originals. The normal 540i had 302mm x 28 mm (11.9 in) fixed rotors front and 300 mm x 20 mm fixed rotors back. Early Japanese Fender and Squier Stratocasters are well-regarded, and are now traded on the used-guitar market as JV, or 'Japanese Vintage'. Only 20 of these cars were built, all with a manual transmission. These inexpensive models are now manufactured in China and Indonesia. Canada also got a special version – the M540i, which was similar to the American 540i Sport but had even more M5 parts, such as 345 mm floating front rotors, 18 inch wheels, and various trim pieces. The name adorns many inexpensive guitars based on Fender designs but with much cheaper construction (for instance, poplar, basswood and agathis replace ash and alder for the bodies - in those cases where the body is made of solid wood, because quite a good deal of Squiers feature plywood bodies - and the maple necks are of a lower grade). 200 of these cars were built, 135 with a 6-speed manual and the remainder with the automatic transmission. The brand name, 'Squier', (previously a string manufacturer bought up by Fender) has been used in the early 1980s to produce (in Japan) cheaper, original Fender guitars to combat the frighteningly accurate copies from Japanese manufacturer Tokai and, later, with the production moving to Korea, for student-grade versions of Fender designs, of varying manufacture and often wildly fluctuating quality. This is not just the usual "sport package" which includes firmer suspension and sport seats, but a 540i that used many parts from the M5, but not the engine and transmission. The older and American-built Strats are by far the most favoured, but Japanese Fenders are now highly regarded as well: Fenders built in Ensenada, Mexico took over for the early Japanese guitars as the downmarket counterparts to the American models, while more recent Japanese Fenders are now mainly for the Japanese market, as counterparts to the American-made Fenders, and with only a small number marked for export. There was a rare 540i Sport model built in 1995. Fender manufactures its highest quality models in the United States and Japan, but also has extensive manufacturing facilities in China and Mexico for downmarket models, such that a new guitar with the name, 'Fender Stratocaster,' can be purchased for roughly the same dollar amount today as in 1954. BMW then introduced Alusil linings for this engine, which solved the problem. Behind the Fender name, the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation has continued to grow, and to add a wider range of products to its catalogs, while still keeping with traditional designs from the company's early years. In America, this made both susceptible to premature engine wear, as high sulfur content in some fuels resulted in deterioration of the linings. In 1985, initiated by a company employee named William Schultz, the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company was bought from CBS by its own employees, and renamed Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. Both the E34 BMW 530i and 540i shared the M60 engine, which used Nikasil bore linings. After selling the Fender company, Leo Fender designed products for Music Man and later founded the G&L company which manufactures top quality electric guitars and basses designed by Leo Fender. Its large, torquey engine, upgraded brakes, and optional 6-speed transmission (offered in 1995) made it very competitive in the sports sedan market. The so-called "Pre-CBS cult" refers to the popularity of Fenders made before the sale. It was available in both sedan and touring models. Maverick) had been little more than attempts to squeeze profits out of factory stock. In 1993 BMW added a 4 liter V8 to the 5-Series lineup. Musiclander) and Custom (a.k.a. It was also offered in a touring version. In addition, previous models such as the Swinger (a.k.a. The 530i replaced the 535i model in 1994, switching from an inline-6 to the new BMW M60, a DOHC, 3.0 liter V8 engine producing 218 hp (160 kW). However, the sale is often now looked back upon unfavorably, due to the perception that CBS favored numbers and profit over quality; the culmination of this occurred in 1983, when the Stratocaster received a short-lived redesign without a second tone control and a bare-bones output jack. Options:. At first, the sale was a taken as a positive development, considering CBS' ability to bring in money and personnel. Standard Equipment: Air Conditioning, AM/FM Cassette with 10 speakers, Rear Defroster, On-Board Computer, Leather Interior, Driver's side airbag (after 1990), 4-wheel anti-lock brakes Power:. Fender's sale to CBS had far-reaching implications. With 5-Speed Getrag manual transmission:. In early 1965, Leo Fender sold his company to the Columbia Broadcasting System, or CBS. The dash and doors are covered in matching vinyl along with chrome trim to add to the luxury. See the article on the Fender Telecaster for more details of the Fender company's early history. The interior features standard leather seating and door panel inserts. At that point Leo renamed the company the "Fender Electric Instrument Company." The service shop remained open until 1951, although Leo Fender did not personally supervise it after 1947. The 60-0 mph (97 to 0 km/h) stopping distance of 130 feet (40 m) was the best of any production sedan in 1990. Kauffman remained unconvinced, however, and they had amicably parted ways by early 1946. The 535i was one of the safest cars on the road during its production, providing airbags, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, and a very rigid body structure to protect occupants in the event of an accident. By the end of the year, Fender had become convinced that manufacturing was more profitable than repair, and he decided to concentrate on that business. gallon (17 to 14 L/100 km) city and 23-29 mpg (U.S.) (10 to 8 L/100 km) highway. Production began in 1945 with Hawaiian lap steel guitars (incorporating a patented pickup) and amplifiers, which were sold as sets. The car can get 14-17 miles per U.S. By the early 1940s, he had partnered with another local electronics enthusiast named Clayton Orr (Doc) Kauffman, and they formed a company named "K & F Manufacturing Corp." to design, manufacture, and sell electric instruments and amplifiers. Only 5% of total production 535i's were 5-speeds. He became intrigued by design flaws in current musical instrument amplifiers, and he began custom-building a few amplifiers based on his own designs or modifications to designs. Despite the 535i designation, the M30 engine found in the E34 535i was actually 3430cc. The business also sidelined in carrying records for sale and the rental of self-designed-and-built PA systems. Production of the E34 535i was discontinued in North America in 1993, replaced by the 530i and 540i models. (Technical note: at the time, most of the above were simply variations on a few simple vacuum-tube circuits). The E34 535i was introduced in Europe as a 1988 model but was not available in North America until 1989. As a qualified electronics technician, Leo was asked to repair not only radios, but phonograph players, home audio amplifiers, public address systems and musical instrument amplifiers. The middle differential normally divides 36% torque to the front axle and 64% to the rear axle, but can alter the ratio according to driving conditions (in case one of the axles starts to slip). The company began as "Fender's Radio Service" in late 1938 in Fullerton, California, USA. It features a computer-controlled rear and middle differentials. . It was available both as a sedan and a wagon (touring version). Its headquarters are in Scottsdale, Arizona, with manufacturing facilities in Corona, California, and OCONUS manufacturing facilities in Ensenada (Mexico), Korea and Japan. The 525iX was the only four-wheel drive version in the E34 series. Other popular and/or notable Fender instruments include the Mustang, Jazzmaster, Jaguar, Starcaster, Duosonic, and Bronco guitars; basses such as the Jazz Bass, the 'Telecaster Bass' reissue of the original 1950s Precision Bass; a line of lap steels, and the Fender Rhodes electric piano. A further revision of the 525i engine took place in 1993, when VANOS was added to the M50 engine which was designated the M50TU. While other companies and luthiers had produced electric guitars since the late 1920s, nearly all were either hollow-body guitars with pickups attached, or more specialized instruments such as Rickenbacker's solid-body Hawaiian lap steel guitars. Also in 1991, the engine was switched from the single overhead cam M20 engine to the double overhead cam M50 engine, raising power to 189 horsepower (141 kW). Fender offered the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the 'Broadcaster', 'Esquire' is a single pickup version); the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (or P-Bass); and the enormously popular Stratocaster guitar (or 'Strat' for short). The 525i was built throughout the E34 production, and in 1992 was offered as a wagon (touring version) in America. Fender is particularly important because of its role in bringing solidbody electric guitars to the masses. It is still considered one of the most reliable BMWs made. The Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, initially named the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company, was started by Leo Fender in the 1940s, and is one of the most widely recognised manufacturers of electric guitars, electric basses and amplifiers.
