Daniel Day-Lewis attended the same theatre school, the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, with fellow British thespian Miranda Richardson. Ferrer died of colon cancer in Coral Gables, Florida at the age of 80. Day-Lewis has also a son from a former relationship with French actress Isabelle Adjani. Ferrer is the uncle of actor George Clooney and the father-in-law of singer Debby Boone. They live in Ireland and have two sons. At the time of his death, Ferrer was married to Stella Magee, whom he married in 1992. Daniel Day-Lewis is married to actress and director Rebecca Miller, daughter of Arthur Miller (author of The Crucible). Ferrer had previously been married to Uta Hagen (1938-1948) and Phyllis Hill (1948-1953).

Other film roles have included The Age of Innocence co-starring Michelle Pfeiffer, In the Name of the Father, The Crucible with Winona Ryder, Last of the Mohicans, and Gangs of New York with Leonardo DiCaprio. The two were married in 1953, divorced in 1961, and remarried in 1964, only to be divorced again in 1967. He returned to the stage to work again with Richard Eyre, as Hamlet at the National Theater, but was forced to leave the production close to the end of its run suffering from exhaustion, and has not appeared on stage since. Clooney was Ferrer's third wife. His performance as Christy Brown in Jim Sheridan's My Left Foot (1989) won him numerous awards, including the Academy Award for best actor. Ferrer had five children with singer-actress Rosemary Clooney: Miguel was born in 1955, Maria in 1956, Gabriel in 1957, Monsita in 1958, and Rafael in 1960. In 1987 he assumed leading man status in Philip Kaufman's The Unbearable Lightness of Being co-starring Juliette Binoche. in the 1980s.

The latter two films opened in New York City on the same day. Ferrer also had a recurring role as Julia Duffy's wealthy father on the popular Newhart television sitcom in the U.S. This role was followed by a completely different character in A Room with a View in 1986, where he played a snobbish, clumsy upper-class-dandy. His other notable films include Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, The Greatest Story Ever Told in 1965, Ship of Fools also in 1965, Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy in 1982, Dune in 1984. In 1984 he had a supporting role in The Bounty, but came to public notice as half of a gay biracial couple in My Beautiful Laundrette. Ferrer also directed, but did not appear in, Return to Peyton Place in 1961 and the re-make of State Fair in 1962. He then went back to the stage in both Bristol and London, and did not return to movies until appearing in a bit part in Gandhi in 1982. In 1958 Ferrer appeared in I Accuse! and The High Cost of Loving.

He was trained on the stage, in Bristol, but he made his film debut in Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971. The Cockleshell Heroes followed a year later, along with The Great Man. Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the gifted actors of his generation, known for his total devotion to the role he plays. In 1955 Ferrer directed himself in The Shrike. His mother is Jill Balcon, actress daughter of Sir Michael Balcon, head of Ealing Studios. He appeared in 1953's Miss Sadie Thompson opposite Rita Hayworth, in 1954's The Caine Mutiny and the MGM musical Deep in My Heart. Although born in London he holds an Irish passport as his father was the Anglo-Irish poet Cecil Day-Lewis, Poet Laureate of England. Also in 1952, Ferrer portrayed French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in John Huston's Moulin Rouge (Oscar nominated).

He played Cyrano yet again in the French movie, Cyrano et D'Artagnan. 1994 - Nominated - Best Actor in a Leading Role - In the Name of the Father. He played the same role on stage in 1946 (winning a Tony Award), and on TV in 1949 and 1955. 2002 - Nominated - Best Actor in a Leading Role - Gangs of New York. In 1950 Ferrer won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Cyrano de Bergerac in the 1950 film of that name.

Ferrer made his film debut with Ingrid Bergman in Joan of Arc in 1948, for which he received his first Academy Award nomination for "Best Supporting Actor".
