She was knighted and became a Dame. Landis died of cancer in Danbury, Connecticut. She was married to Peter Fleming an explorer and writer and brother of Ian Fleming. Her autobiography, titled You Won't Be So Pretty (But You'll Know More) was published in 1954. She generally played a genteel and/or repressed Englishwoman, though she proved in many stage productions to be a talented comedienne. She married three times. Other films include The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969). In real life she was 10 months younger than Grant.

She made relatively few films, of which Brief Encounter is by far the best known. In North By Northwest she plays his mother and in To Catch a Thief she plays Grace Kelly's mother. By 1931, she was starring as Ophelia in a New York production of Hamlet. She appears in both of these films with Cary Grant. Her stage début was in Major Barbara in 1928. In the 1950s, she began appearing in movies as a character actress, most notably in North By Northwest and To Catch a Thief. She was born in Richmond, Surrey, and trained in acting at RADA. Landis was a stage actress for much of her career.

Dame Celia Johnson (1908-1982) was an English actress, famous for her role in the 1945 film, Brief Encounter, opposite Trevor Howard. She was born Jessie Royce Medbury in Chicago, Illinois. Jessie Royce Landis (25 November 1904 - 2 February 1972) was an American actress.
