Bell is married to Adam Beason and has a daughter, Gemma. In December 2003 she wrote a letter informing Democrat John Kerry that his pheasant hunting had cost him her vote. Bell is fluent in Persian and is a noted member of the Church of Scientology. She is also a lifelong Democrat. She is currently on the television show JAG, where she plays Marine Lt Colonel Sarah McKenzie. A lifelong animal rights advocate, McClanahan was one of the first celebrity supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. In 2003, Bell played a supporting role in the comedy Bruce Almighty, which starred Jim Carrey. McClanahan expected negative fan reaction but was generally popular, even getting one letter advising her on the best poisons to kill Pat with!.

Her first appearance in a film was as a body double for Isabella Rossellini in Death Becomes Her (1992). Due in part to McClanahan's performance, he short-term role was extended to over a year before Caroline was finally brought to justice after kidnapping the twins. One of her first modelling jobs was an extended assignment in Japan. While taking care of twins Michael and Marianne Randolph, Caroline fell in love with their father, John, and began poisoning their mother, Pat. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with an interest in becoming a biomedical engineer or doctor but dropped out to become a model. Unlike a number of actors who become famous after leaving soaps, McClanahan has always praised daytime drama and the people who work in it. She acted in various television advertisements as a child. Her breakout role was of maniacal nanny Caroline Johnson on Another World from July 1970-September 1971.

Her parents divorced and she and her mother moved to Los Angeles when she was three years old. In the latter series, broadcast from 1985 until 1992, McClanahan portrayed the man-crazed Southern belle Blanche Deveraux. Bell is the daughter of a British father and Iranian mother. In the former series, broadcast from 1972 to 1978, McClanahan played Maude Findlay's best friend, Vivian Harmon.
