Billy Joe Royal (born April 3, 1942 in Valdosta, Georgia) is an American singer.

Raised in Marietta, Georgia, Royal became a local singing sensation in the 1950's and 1960's at the Bamboo Ranch in Savannah, Georgia. He is famous for the 1960s pop music hit "Down in the Boondocks" written by friend, Joe South. His other pop music hits include "I Knew You When."

During the 1980's, Billy Joe Royal also scored several top 10 country hits including "Tell It Like It Is," "Burned Like a Rocket," and "I'll Pin a Note on Your Pillow."

They wrote and recorded the track "Move Ya Body" over the riddim and sent a demo tape to Next Plateau/Universal Music who promptly signed them. Sounds suggested that the girls should write a song based on the dancehall riddim "Coolie Skank". They auditioned for production team the Jettsonz, who in turn referred them to hip hop producer Cipha Sounds.
