Retired from acting, she lives in Maine. Bullock publicly donated $1 million twice to the American Red Cross, first to its Liberty Disaster Relief Fund and again over four years later, in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunamis. In the 1984-1985 season she was replaced by Donna Reed because of Bel Geddes's heart surgery. The builder denies any wrongdoing and is appealing the verdict. From 1978 to 1991, Bel Geddes played Miss Ellie Ewing Farlow on the prime time soap opera Dallas. In October 2004, she won a multi-million-dollar judgment in a lawsuit against Benny Daneshjou, the builder of her Lake Austin, Texas mansion, a home in which she has never lived, claiming it is uninhabitable. Her career restarted when Alfred Hitchcock cast her in four episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents as well as an important role in the movie Vertigo (1958). She was engaged to actor Tate Donovan.

However, the House Unamerican Activities Committee investigations essentially ended her film career. She is dating motorcycle builder and Monster Garage host Jesse James and has also dated Troy Aikman, Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Gosling. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for I Remember Mama (1948). Bullock is single and has no children. Her film career began with 1947's The Long Night. Bullock attended Washington-Lee High School where she was a cheerleader and was voted "Most Likely to Brighten up Your Day" by her class. Her most notable stage performance was originating the role of Maggie in Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway in 1955. She started singing as a child in Germany, where she also studied ballet and performed small parts in her Mother's operas.

Bel Geddes, the daughter of architect Norman Bel Geddes, began as stage actress. Bullock was born to the late German-born opera singer Helga Meyer, and American voice teacher John Bullock.
