However, director Jamie Blanks still wanted Burress to star in the motion picture. Bening met actor Warren Beatty on the set of the film Bugsy (1991) and the two started a secret romance. Burress auditioned for the role of Dorothy Wheeler in the motion picture Valentine, but that role was handed over to Jessica Capshaw. Her first major feature film role was in The Great Outdoors (1988). Several gamers believe that Burress did better in Final Fantasy X-2 than she did in Final Fantasy X, and believed that she took voice lessons between the two projects. Her first film was Manhunt for Claude Dallas, a made-for-TV movie which came out in 1986. She has been accused of synchronizing Yuna's CG lips, which were programmed to speak Japanese, not English. However, she endured a five-year struggle before breaking into film. Her Yuna performance in Final Fantasy X is controversial and considered by some players to be grating. In 1985, she moved to New York where she won a Tony Award nomination for her debut performance in Coastal Disturbances. Burress is known by video game players as the English voice actor of Yuna in the PlayStation 2 games Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2.

Bening then studied at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater, and joined its acting company. She has acted in many television programs and motion pictures since 1996. She completed her drama degree at San Francisco State University. She relocated to Los Angeles, California, in 1995. She finished high school in three years and attended San Diego Mesa College. She attended Milikin University in Decatur, Illinois. In junior high, she played the lead in The Sound of Music. She was born Heather Burress in Edwardsville, Illinois.
