She has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame at 7020 Hollywood Boulevard. She also previously dated actor Cary Grant. For many years, she was the spokeswoman for Tylenol brand aspirin. Sheridan was married four times, including a marriage lasting one year to the actor George Brent. Her partner for over fifteen years has been psychologist and author Connell Cowan. She became ill during the filming of the first season, and died from esophageal and liver cancer in Woodland Hills, California. She played the snooty country-club matriarch Kitty Montgomery on the series from 1997 to 2002 and gained a new audience altogether. She appeared in the television soap opera Another World during the mid sixties, and then started a role in the television series Pistols and Petticoats. However, it was not until a supporting role in the movie My Best Friend's Wedding (as the mother of Cameron Diaz's character) that ABC executives were interested in Sullivan for a part on a new sitcom, Dharma and Greg.

Her role in I Was A Male War Bride (1949) gave her another success but by the fifties she was struggling to find work and her film roles were sporadic. Sullivan drifted out of the public consciousness again, with appearances on The George Carlin Show and the political drama The Monroes in the early and mid-1990s. Despite these successes, her career began to decline. Until her character was killed off, Sullivan had appeared in every episode of the series (out of the 227 episodes produced, she had appeared in the first 207). She received substantial roles and positive reaction from critics and moviegoers in such films as Angels With Dirty Faces (1938 opposite James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart), Dodge City (1939 opposite Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland), Torrid Zone and They Drive By Night ( both 1940), The Man Who Came To Dinner (1942 opposite Bette Davis) and Kings Row (1942 where she received top billing playing opposite Ronald Reagan, Robert Cummings and Betty Field). When Sullivan wished to leave the show, the writers of the series had her exit in dramatic fashion, with Maggie drowning at the bottom of the family pool, the result of her wedding ring being caught in the pool drain after she tried to fish her son's toys out. Her career prospects began to improve and tagged The Oomph Girl, Sheridan had become a popular pin-up girl by the early forties. The role of Maggie brought her back into the limelight and was her most successful role to date, acting on the series from 1981 to 1989.

She made her film debut in 1934 in the film Search For Beauty and played uncredited bit parts in Paramount films for the next two years. Paramount made little effort to develop her talent so she left, signing a contract with Warner Brothers in 1936 and changing her name to Ann Sheridan. At first, Sullivan turned down the role, but accepted when the producers insisted. She abandoned college to pursue a career in Hollywood. This role led to a successful audition for Falcon Crest. She subsequently entered and won a beauty contest, with part of her prize being a bit part in a Paramount film. In 1980, she wished to restart her career by appearing on the sitcom It's a Living. Born Clara Lou Sheridan in Denton, Texas, she was a college student when her sister sent a photograph of her to Paramount Studios. Julie Farr in Having Babies, which was made into two television movies and later a weekly series, was much ballyhooed but, in the end, proved very unsuccessful.
