Harding became stereotyped as the innocent young woman willing to sacrifice herself for others, and she eventually quit making movies when she married in 1937, although she was lured back in 1942 to make Eyes in the Night. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her turn as a cynical photographer in The Philadelphia Story. In 1931 she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for Holiday. She quickly became a leading lady in MGM's "B" unit, usually playing sophisticated, worldly roles. In 1929 she made her film debut in Paris Bound, opposite Fredric March. She obtained some stage roles with touring companies and was noticed by MGM, which signed her and with whom she made her film debut in 1937. Following school, she got a job as a script reader, and began acting on Broadway. She journeyed to New York City, where she was signed as a model by the world-famous Powers agency.
