Previous relationships include actor Steven Sutphen and Marilyn Manson drummer Ginger Fish. She has been married to cinematographer Janusz Kaminski since 1995, although the couple has been separated for several years. She owns a home in Sacramento, California and married actor Alexis Denisof on October 11, 2003. Hunter has also appeared in several television films with remarkable performances, and has earned two Emmys. In early 2004, Hannigan made her West End debut starring in a stage adaptation of When Harry Met Sally at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, opposite Luke Perry. In this year she also earned again a nomination as Best Supporting Actress for The Firm, starring Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman. Reports indicated that it was likely to be titled Americana, but the pilot was not part of NBC's 2004 fall lineup. In 1993, she won the Oscar, for The Piano.

It was announced in October 2003 that she had signed a deal with NBC to appear in a comedy, expected to debut in fall 2004. That same year she starred in Broadcast News, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. By the final season she was earning $250,000 an episode. Hunter's first starring role in movies was in 1987, when she appeared in Raising Arizona. Before that she had done a little television work, mostly commercials, and she went on to do a good deal more including Almost Home, Picket Fences, Roseanne and Touched by an Angel before being chosen for Buffy in 1997. She was cast in several Henley plays on Broadway, including Crimes of the Heart and The Miss Firecracker Festival. Born in Washington, DC, her first film role was in My Stepmother is an Alien (1988). Her parents encouraged her to become an actress and Hunter went to Pittsburgh to study drama at Carnegie Mellon University, where she graduated in 1980. Thereafter she moved to New York City, where she happened to meet playwright Beth Henley in an elevator.
