After playing a succession of flappers and gold diggers, she attracted the attention of the director Mervyn Leroy who saw potential in her. With the advent of talking pictures, White began to attract a level of popularity she had not achieved in silent movies, but her career was severely damaged by a scandal with two men she was sexually involved with. Although she married one of these men, her reputation was tarnished and she appeared only in supporting roles after this. She made her final film appearance in Flamingo Road (1949).
