Knox was unable to follow up with any Hollywood success, and he returned to England. After leaving the act, Gummo went into the dressmaking business. In 1944 he was chosen by Darryl F. Zanuck to star in Wilson, the biographical film about Woodrow Wilson, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. This was before they made any of their famous movies.
