This page will contain discussion groups about Air Force 1, as they become available.Air Force OneFor other uses, see Air Force One (disambiguation).Air Force One is the air traffic control call sign of any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States (it is a common misconception that "Air Force One" refers to a single airplane). Since 1990, the presidential fleet has consisted of two specifically configured, highly customized Boeing 747-200B series aircraft—tail numbers 28000 and 29000—with Air Force designation VC-25A. While these planes are only referred to as "Air Force One" while the president is on board, the term is commonly used to describe either of two aircraft normally used and maintained by the U.S. Air Force solely for the president. The VC-25A is capable of flying 12 600 km (7,800 miles)—roughly one-third of the distance around the world—without refueling and can accommodate more than 70 passengers. Before these planes entered service, two Boeing 707-320B-type aircraft—tail numbers 26000 and 27000—had operated as Air Force One starting in 1962. The Air Force designation for these aircraft was VC-137. Since its inception, Air Force One has become a symbol of presidential power and prestige. OperationThese aircraft are maintained and operated as military operations by the Presidential Airlift Group, part of Air Mobility Command's 89th Airlift Wing, based at Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs, Maryland. The President is often flown in a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter, call sign Marine One, between Andrews AFB and the White House. Capability and featuresThe planes that serve as Air Force One differ from the standard Boeing 747 in size, features, and security precautions. While Air Force One has three floors, like a regular Boeing 747, its interior has been reconfigured for presidential duties. The planes' 4,000 square feet (370 m²) of interior floor space include multiple modifications. The planes' lowest levels are mostly cargo space, carrying luggage and the plane's food supply. The food can supply up to 2,000 meals when fully loaded, some of which is stored in freezers. Meals are prepared in two galleys, which together are equipped to feed about 100 people at a time. The main passenger area is on the second floor, and communications equipment and the cockpit are on the third floor. There are three entrances onboard. Writer Tom Harris notes: On board Air Force One are medical facilities, including a fold-out operating table, emergency medical supplies, and a well-stocked pharmacy. On every flight there is a staff doctor. In addition, there are separate sleeping quarters for guests, senior staff, Secret Service and security personnel, and the news media; the president's executive suite includes a private dressing room, workout room, lavatory, shower, and private office. These offices, including the president's suite, are mostly located on the starboard, and a long corridor runs along the port. Whenever Air Force One rolls up to an event, it always comes to a stop with the port side of the aircraft facing gathered onlookers as a security measure to keep the President's side of the aircraft out of view. Air Force One on the ground. In the office areas, Air Force One features access to photocopying, printing, and word processing services, as well as telecommunication systems (including 85 telephones and 19 televisions). There are also secure and non-secure voice, fax, and data communications. Most of the furniture on board was hand-crafted by master carpenters. The planes can also be operated as a military command center in the event of an incident such as a nuclear attack. Operational modifications include aerial refueling capability and anti-aircraft missile countermeasures. The electronics on board are connected with approximately 238 miles (383 km) of wiring, twice that of a regular 747. All wiring is covered with heavy shielding for protection from an electromagnetic pulse in the event of a nuclear attack. The planes also have electronic countermeasures (ECMs) to jam enemy radar and flares to avoid heat-seeking missiles. Many of Air Force One's other capabilities are classified for security reasons. HistoryThe C-54 Skymaster aircraft, nicknamed the Sacred Cow.Prior to World War II, overseas and cross-country presidential travel was rare. Lack of telecommunications and quick transportation made long-distance travel impractical, as it took up much time and isolated the President from events in Washington. First of "Flying Presidents"In the 1940s and 1950s, however, air travel became much more convenient. The first president to fly in an airplane while in office was Franklin D. Roosevelt, who traveled on a Boeing 314 "flying boat" aircraft to a 1943 conference in Casablanca on the progress of World War II. The main reason at the time for presidential air travel was the threat of the German Navy's U-boats in the Atlantic. The continuing threat from the submarines established air travel as a usual means of distance transportation for the President. The first aircraft officially designated for Presidential flight was the C-87A Liberator Express, a reconfigured B-24 bomber. This plane was called Guess Where Two. However, the plane was no longer used for Roosevelt after another C-87A crashed; the Secret Service reconfigured a C-54 Skymaster as a replacement. This plane was nicknamed the Sacred Cow and included a sleeping area, radio telephone, and retractable elevator for Roosevelt's wheelchair. It carried the president to several important events, most notably the Yalta Conference. The Secret Service, not wishing to waste resources, instead put the C-87A plane to use by having Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt use it instead. The Independence. After Roosevelt died in spring 1945, Vice President Harry S. Truman became President. He replaced the C-54 with a modified C-118 Liftmaster, calling it the Independence, possibly in reference to President Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri. This was the first aircraft acting as Air Force One that had a distinctive exterior (an eagle head painted on its nose). The Columbine IIIThe call signs were established for security purposes during the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the first American president to have been a pilot in his own right. The change stemmed from a 1953 incident where an Eastern Airlines commercial flight (8610) had the same call sign as a flight the President was on (Air Force 8610). The planes accidentally entered the same airspace, and after the incident the unique call sign "Air Force One" was made for the presidential aircraft. Eisenhower also introduced two other propeller aircraft, the Lockheed C-121 Constellations (VC-121E) to Presidential service. These planes were named Columbine II and Columbine III by Mamie Eisenhower after the official state flower of Colorado, her adopted home state. President Eisenhower also upgraded Air Force One's technology by adding an air-to-ground telephone and an air-to-ground teletype machine. Towards the end of Eisenhower's term, in 1958, the Air Force added three Boeing 707 jets into the fleet. Boeing 707s as Air Force OneThe most famous photo ever taken on Air Force One: Lyndon B. Johnson being sworn in by Judge Sarah T. Hughes in following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. President George W. Bush, Laura Bush and Nancy Reagan tour the plane that served seven presidents from 1973-2001.With John F. Kennedy, presidential air travel officially entered the jet age. In 1962, he added a modified, long-range 707 to the fleet—Special Air Missions (SAM) 26000. He also commissioned industrial designer Raymond Loewy to create a distinctive exterior for the plane. Loewy came up with a powder blue and white design, the same colors used today; he also had the words "United States of America" put on the fuselage's side and the U.S. flag painted on the tail. Because the aircraft would be solely for the use of the president, Kennedy asked that the Presidential seal be added to both sides of the nose. In late June 1963, Kennedy flew on SAM 26000 to Berlin, where he made his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, and to Ireland. A month earlier, it broke 30 speed records when carrying a delegation to Moscow, including the fastest non-stop flight between Washington and Moscow. On November 22, 1963, SAM 26000 carried President John F. Kennedy to Dallas, Texas, where early that afternoon he was assassinated. It was on the plane (while it was at Love Field) that Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of office, and the plane carried Kennedy's body back to Washington. SAM 26000 flew over Arlington National Cemetery as Kennedy was being laid to rest. SAM 26000 also carried President Richard Nixon on his historic trips to mainland China and to Russia in 1972. Later in 1972, SAM 26000 became the backup aircraft when another 707, SAM 27000, arrived. On January 22, 1973, LBJ died. Two days later, SAM 26000 brought the former president's body to Washington, coming from Texas for the state funeral the following day. After the funeral, SAM 26000 brought his body on one final journey home, back to Texas for his burial, landing at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, the airfield Johnson flew into and out of when president. As the former president was laid to rest at his ranch, retired Brigadier General James Cross, pilot of SAM 26000 in Johnson's day, turned over the flag to his wife, Lady Bird, at her request. He also escorted her during the state funeral, also at her request. The role SAM 26000 played during the funeral made several points clear:
President Nixon dubbed the presidential airliner The Spirit of 1976, in recognition of the upcoming American bicentennial. In 1974, when Richard M. Nixon resigned the presidency and departed from Andrews AFB on Air Force One, it was arranged that the plane's call sign would switch from Air Force One to SAM designation (SAM 27000). It was President Ford who first decided that the name of the aircraft itself should be Air Force One, along with the call sign. SAM 27000 was the primary presidential aircraft for more presidents than any other. It began service under Nixon and served Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush until it was replaced by the 747's in 1990. Transition to Boeing 747sRonald Reagan's two terms as President saw no major changes to Air Force One but the fabrication of the current 747s began. Most of the interior was completed in Wichita, Kansas. The aircraft was delivered in 1990, during the administration of George H. W. Bush. On October 6, 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated. Because of security concerns, Reagan did not attend the funeral, nor did then-Vice President Bush. Instead, President Reagan sent Secretary of State Alexander Haig and the living former presidents—Nixon, Ford, and Carter—to the funeral. Former secretary of state Henry Kissinger was also on board. In 1987, Reagan flew on SAM 27000 to Berlin and made his famous "Tear down this wall!" speech. President George W. Bush added a treadmill to Air Force One. Bush was noted for going to the plane's pressroom to talk to reporters far less than his predecessors. In November 2003, there was a minor controversy when Air Force One's crew lied to the crew of a passing British Airways jet, informing them that the 416-ton 747 was a 45-ton Gulfstream V corporate jet, while transporting George W. Bush to Iraq to spend Thanksgiving with troops stationed there,1 though White House officials later denied this.2. One of the most dramatic episodes aboard Air Force One happened on September 11, 2001, when it flew President George W. Bush from Sarasota, Florida, where he was interrupted at an education event because of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Instead of returning to Washington, the Secret Service ordered Air Force One to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana, and then to the former Strategic Air Command (now United States Strategic Command) headquarters at Offut AFB in Nebraska, before returning to Washington. The following day, officials at the White House and the U.S. Department of Justice said that the plan was enacted because there was evidence "that the White House and Air Force One were targets." Location of past planes that served as Air Force OneAircraft which have formerly served as Air Force One are on display in the Presidential Hangar of the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio (Sacred Cow, Independence, Columbine III, SAM 26000, and other smaller Presidential aircraft), as well as the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington (earlier VC-137B). The Boeing 707 that served as Air Force One during the 1980s (SAM 27000) is on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The jet is part of a museum of presidential travel, located at this location. The Air Force One Pavilion was opened to the public on October 24, 2005. A Douglas VC-118A Liftmaster used by John F. Kennedy is on display at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. New aircraft to fulfill the role of Air Force One may be acquired as soon as 2010, when the current 747s will be 20 years old. Popular cultureAir Force One is a prominent symbol of the presidency and its power; after the White House, it is probably the most recognized Presidential institution. Air Force One has often been featured in popular culture and fiction, most notably in the 1997 action movie Air Force One, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Wolfgang Petersen. In the film, Russian terrorists hijack Air Force One and hold the President and other passengers hostage. The film was noted for its fancifully exaggerated depiction of the plane's capabilities; for example, the real Air Force One does not officially carry an escape capsule, though this cannot be refuted since the exact specifications of the aircraft are classified at the highest level. Air Force One has been featured in other films (Independence Day, Superman, and Escape from New York, which also featured the unconfirmable escape pod), books (The President's Plane is Missing), and TV series (The West Wing, Commander in Chief, 24 and NCIS). Three missions of the Nintendo 64 video game Perfect Dark involve a futuristic Air Force One, and once again featured the escape pod. The player, a secret agent, must attempt to stop the kidnapping of the President during these missions. First they have to sneak aboard the plane at an Alaskan Air Force base. Then they have to protect the President and get him to the escape pod when aliens conspiring with NSA personnel invade the aircraft mid-flight via a troopship. After the plane crash lands on Victoria Island, the player must once again rescue the president from enemy forces, encountering portions of the aircraft and furniture thrown from the impact along the way. In Anthony Horowitz's novel Eagle Strike, the teenage spy Alex Rider is trapped inside the hijacked Air Force One, providing the reader a description of the plane's interior. The starship of Colonial President Laura Roslin in the Sci Fi Channel TV series Battlestar Galactica bore the call sign Colonial Heavy 798 until Roslin succeeded President Adar after he was killed in the Cylon attack, at which point it was renamed Colonial One. The interior and role of the ship were heavily influenced by Air Force One. Similarly, in the TV series Babylon 5, the President's ship bears the call sign Earth Force One. In both series, presidents take the oath of office in a scene closely modeled after the swearing in of Lyndon Johnson. Further, in the film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the chancellor of the Klingon Empire is carried on a ship called Qo'noS One (pronounced as 'Kronos' - Qo'noS being the name of the Klingon homeworld). A stage of the arcade game Ghost Squad has the players retake "Air Force One" from a terrorist group. The plane shown in the FMV's looks more like a Boeing 707 with a noticeably higher fuselage profile or the Airbus Beluga than the Boeing 747. In the Christian fiction series Left Behind, President Gerald Fitzhugh donates Air Force One to UN Secretary-General Nicolae Carpathia and christens it Global Community One (The Global Community being the name of Nicolae Carpathia's proposed One World Government). Union Pacific 4141 is an EMD SD70ACe locomotive with a paint scheme based on that of Air Force One. In fashion, the term "Air Force Ones" is used to describe a particular all-white shoe that has been sold by Nike since the 1980s. These shoes have become popular hip hop icons, and have even been the focus of a 2002 rap song by rapper Nelly aptly titled "Air Force Ones." In the book Deception Point by Dan Brown, Air Force One is described from the exterior and a number of miscellaneous facts are mentioned and one of the main characters meets the President of the U.S. on board the plane. Analogues in other countriesAir Force One at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida on June 16, 2004.No other mode of transportation for government executives is as well-known as Air Force One; most nations, even industrialized ones, do not maintain a separate aircraft for heads of state and government, although most have a military "VIP fleet" that provides aircraft when senior government officials must travel. ArgentinaArgentina operates a small fleet of aircraft and helicopters for the use of the President, family, and senior government officials. This group is known as Agrupación Aérea Presidencial (Presidential Air Group), and belongs to the Argentine Air Force, but comes under the administration of the Casa Militar ("Military House"), the department responsible for Presidential security and transportation. The current Presidential fleet includes a Boeing 757 popularly known as Tango 01 after its military registry, "T-01" (the "T" stands for "Transport", and is pronounced "Tango" in the NATO Alphabet), a Rockwell Sabreliner, a Fokker F28 and two helicopters, one Sikorsky S-70 and one Sikorsky S-76. Tango 01 has been at times an object of political contention (even a campaign issue during the 1999 Presidential elections), since many politicians and media commentators decry the aircraft as an unnecessary luxury; while others point at the discretion with which the plane is used by several Presidents, their families and their friends and allies for non-official purposes. Tango-01, however, experienced engine trouble over Israel and is currently stranded in that nation. In the meantime, two chartered Boeing 747s operated by Aerolineas Argentinas currently serve the Presidential transport role. [1] AustraliaIn 2002, the Royal Australian Air Force acquired two new Boeing Business Jets fitted with facilities such as conference tables, offices suites, secure satellite and communication capabilities for use by Australian officials, especially the Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Governor-General. The two planes also had a range capability more than that of other Boeing Business Jets. The Prime Minister regularly uses the jets for both domestic and international travel. The aircraft are also made available to the British royal family (who are considered Australian Royals when in Australia), and were recently utilized by Prince Charles in 2005. The planes are operated by the No. 34 Squadron RAAF (which also operates a number of smaller VIP aircraft), based at Fairbairn Airbase, Canberra. The prime minister previously flew in custom-configured Royal Australian Air Force Boeing 707s that were larger than the 737s currently in use. CanadaCanadian Bombardier Challenger 604The Canadian Air Force's 437 Squadron operates one of five Airbus A310-300s (CC-150 Polaris) in a VIP configuration for the transport of the Prime Minister, high ranking government officials and foreign dignitaries[2]. In Addition, 412 Squadron operates four Bombardier Challenger 604 business jets (CC-144)[3] for VIP transport. BrazilBrazil has had presidential aircraft since 1941, when Getulio Vargas purchased a Lockheed Lodestar. In 1959, president Juscelino Kubitschek replaced it with two Vickers Viscounts. In 1967, Artur da Costa e Silva acquired a BAC-111, which was used until 1976, when president Ernesto Geisel replaced it with two Boeing 737-200. In 1986, president Jose Sarney purchased a Boeing 707, which was known as Sucatão (Big Junk). The 707 was used until May of 2003, when president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva replaced it for a brand new Airbus A319 Corporate Jetliner, which despite being officially named Santos Dumont, is called Aerolula, in reference to the president's nickname. Burkina FasoA Boeing 707-328C XT-BBF, operated by Naganagani, is used to transport the President of Burkina Faso. FranceFrance's officials travel with the Escadron de transport, d'entraînement et de calibrage (ETEC, "Transportation, training and calibration squadron"), a unit under direct orders of the Ministry of Defence. The ETEC uses 6 Falcon 900 for travels within Europe, and 2 Airbus A319 for medium or long range flights. Air France chartered flights are also used by French officials, most notably the Concorde when it was still in service with that airline. GermanyGermany's head-of-government uses the Konrad Adenauer, named after the first chancellor of (West) Germany. More broadly, the German air force's "standby airlifting unit" (Flugbereitschaft) has about a dozen business jets and helicopters to handle the transportation needs of German senior officials. JapanJapanese government 747 in SapporoJapan maintains two 747-47C (20-1101 and 20-1102) aircraft for the Prime Minister, the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and other Government Officials via the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The planes share a similar scheme to Air Force One: Japan spelled out in Kanji and English on the fuselage, a red stripe painted across the windows from nose to tail, and the Hinomaru on the tail and both wings. Netherlands, Kingdom of theThe Dutch government operates a Fokker 70(F28-0070) as a means of transport for the Dutch Royal family and government officials, such as the prime minister and other ministers. It is used to attend international conferences, but also for trips by the queen and the prince royal. The callsign is PH-KBX; PH for the Netherlands and KBX for 'Koningin BeatriX' or 'Queen Beatrice'. The aircraft is maintained by Martinair. People's Republic of ChinaA used Boeing 767 was purchased by the People's Republic of China government for use by President Jiang Zemin in 2000. An international incident occurred in 2001 when the government claimed it had discovered 27 bugs embedded in the aircraft's interior; the plane had been refitted in San Antonio, Texas. United KingdomThe Royal Air Force has historically been responsible for Royal and executive transportation with its Vickers VC-10 aircraft for long-range travel and No. 32 Squadron's BAe 146 and BAe 125 aircraft for short range trips. With the military burden on the VC-10 fleet increasing as the number of aircraft in service decreases (and their increasing obsolescence), the Prime Minister and Royal Family have increasingly used chartered British Airways jets for long range travel (typically Boeing 777s). Attempts by Tony Blair to acquire a dedicated government airliner have been reported as long ago as 1998 and such an aircraft has been labelled "Blair Force One" by the media. [4] In 2003 then Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told the House of Commons Intelligence and Security Committee that a military aircraft with advanced communications available to the Prime Minister was a necessary expense. [5] The Concorde was also notably used to transport the Prime Minister from time to time, particularly to international conferences abroad; it should be noted, however, that Concordes were chartered from British Airways much like the Boeing 777 is currently. VaticanWhenever the Pope flies on a plane, it is nicknamed "Shepherd One." Typically, it is a chartered Alitalia jumbo jet, however, the nickname follows the Pope to smaller craft when necessary to land at small airports, for example, Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories in 1984 (aborted by fog) and 1988, when a Boeing 737 was used. Whenever the Pope flies on a plane, it is nicknamed "Shepherd One." Typically, it is a chartered Alitalia jumbo jet, however, the nickname follows the Pope to smaller craft when necessary to land at small airports, for example, Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories in 1984 (aborted by fog) and 1988, when a Boeing 737 was used. The following is a partial list of concept cars.. The Concorde was also notably used to transport the Prime Minister from time to time, particularly to international conferences abroad; it should be noted, however, that Concordes were chartered from British Airways much like the Boeing 777 is currently. The following is a list of models Audi ostensibly plans to offer in the future.. [5]. Audi now has an impressive range of cars, engines and transmissions available, which continue to lead the way and introduce new technologies into the market. [4] In 2003 then Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told the House of Commons Intelligence and Security Committee that a military aircraft with advanced communications available to the Prime Minister was a necessary expense. Recent examples of this include DSG and FSI. Attempts by Tony Blair to acquire a dedicated government airliner have been reported as long ago as 1998 and such an aircraft has been labelled "Blair Force One" by the media. As a premium member of the VW Group, technologies are frequently first introduced to the mass market with Audi vehicles before being 'trickled down' to more value oriented brands such as VW, SEAT and Škoda. With the military burden on the VC-10 fleet increasing as the number of aircraft in service decreases (and their increasing obsolescence), the Prime Minister and Royal Family have increasingly used chartered British Airways jets for long range travel (typically Boeing 777s). This is a direct fuel-injection technique that Audi had also used on its diesel engines since the early 1980s. 32 Squadron's BAe 146 and BAe 125 aircraft for short range trips. Audi has now introduced FSI on some of their engines, including the 1.6 L 4 cylinder, a new 2.0 L (Audi was the first manufacturer in the world to utilize a turbo charger and FSI on the same powerplant), and the 3.1 L V6. The Royal Air Force has historically been responsible for Royal and executive transportation with its Vickers VC-10 aircraft for long-range travel and No. New models of the A3, A4, A6 and A8 have been introduced, with the 1.8 L engine now 2.0 L and the 3.0 L V6 is now 3.1 L in size. An international incident occurred in 2001 when the government claimed it had discovered 27 bugs embedded in the aircraft's interior; the plane had been refitted in San Antonio, Texas. The engine range was continually upgraded, with a 2.7 L twin turbo V6 being offered in the Audi S4, A6 and allroad, the 2.8 L V6 was replaced by a 3.0 L unit. A used Boeing 767 was purchased by the People's Republic of China government for use by President Jiang Zemin in 2000. This is implemented in some Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and TT models. The aircraft is maintained by Martinair. The system includes dual electrohydraulically controlled clutches instead of a torque converter. The callsign is PH-KBX; PH for the Netherlands and KBX for 'Koningin BeatriX' or 'Queen Beatrice'. At the turn of the century, Audi introduced the direct shift gearbox (DSG), a manual transmission driveable like an automatic transmission. It is used to attend international conferences, but also for trips by the queen and the prince royal. Further engines were added along the way, including a 3.7 L V8 and 6.0 L W12 for the A8. The Dutch government operates a Fokker 70(F28-0070) as a means of transport for the Dutch Royal family and government officials, such as the prime minister and other ministers. The V6's were replaced by new 2.4 and 2.8 L 30V V6's in 1998, with marked improvement in power, torque and smoothness. The planes share a similar scheme to Air Force One: Japan spelled out in Kanji and English on the fuselage, a red stripe painted across the windows from nose to tail, and the Hinomaru on the tail and both wings. The engines available throughout the range were now a 1.4 L, 1.6 L and 1.8 L 4 cylinder, 1.8 turbo, 2.6 L and 2.8 L V6, 2.2 L turbo-charged 5 cylinder and the 4.2 L V8. Japan maintains two 747-47C (20-1101 and 20-1102) aircraft for the Prime Minister, the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and other Government Officials via the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The model sold relatively well in Europe, however Audi decided not to develop a new model and it has since been discontinued as of 2004. More broadly, the German air force's "standby airlifting unit" (Flugbereitschaft) has about a dozen business jets and helicopters to handle the transportation needs of German senior officials. Another interesting model introduced was the Mercedes-Benz A-Class competitor, the Audi A2. Germany's head-of-government uses the Konrad Adenauer, named after the first chancellor of (West) Germany. A new A3 (based on the Volkswagen Golf) was introduced to the range in 1997, and the radical TT coupe and roadster were debuted in 1998 based on the same underpinnings. Air France chartered flights are also used by French officials, most notably the Concorde when it was still in service with that airline. The Audi Cabriolet continued on (based on the Audi 80 platform) until 1999, gaining the engine upgrades along the way. The ETEC uses 6 Falcon 900 for travels within Europe, and 2 Airbus A319 for medium or long range flights. The S2 was discontinued. France's officials travel with the Escadron de transport, d'entraînement et de calibrage (ETEC, "Transportation, training and calibration squadron"), a unit under direct orders of the Ministry of Defence. This also meant the S4 became the S6 and a new S4 was introduced in the A4 body. A Boeing 707-328C XT-BBF, operated by Naganagani, is used to transport the President of Burkina Faso. The new nomenclature scheme was applied to the Audi 100 to become the Audi A6 (with a minor facelift). The 707 was used until May of 2003, when president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva replaced it for a brand new Airbus A319 Corporate Jetliner, which despite being officially named Santos Dumont, is called Aerolula, in reference to the president's nickname. The next major model change was in 1995 when the Audi A4 replaced the Audi 80. In 1986, president Jose Sarney purchased a Boeing 707, which was known as Sucatão (Big Junk). The weight reduction was offset by the quattro all-wheel drive system, however it meant the car had similar performance to its rivals, but far superior handling. In 1967, Artur da Costa e Silva acquired a BAC-111, which was used until 1976, when president Ernesto Geisel replaced it with two Boeing 737-200. The Audi A8 replaced the V8 in 1994, with a revolutionary Aluminium Space Frame (ASF) to save weight. In 1959, president Juscelino Kubitschek replaced it with two Vickers Viscounts. These two models were the beginning of the mass produced S series of performance cars. Brazil has had presidential aircraft since 1941, when Getulio Vargas purchased a Lockheed Lodestar. It was fitted to the Audi Coupe and named the S2 and also to the Audi 100 body, and named the S4. In Addition, 412 Squadron operates four Bombardier Challenger 604 business jets (CC-144)[3] for VIP transport. The engine, initially fitted to the 200 quattro 20V of 1991, was a derivative of the engine fitted to the Sport Quattro. The Canadian Air Force's 437 Squadron operates one of five Airbus A310-300s (CC-150 Polaris) in a VIP configuration for the transport of the Prime Minister, high ranking government officials and foreign dignitaries[2]. The 5 cylinder was soon dropped as a major engine choice, however a turbocharged 230BHP (169kW) version remained. The prime minister previously flew in custom-configured Royal Australian Air Force Boeing 707s that were larger than the 737s currently in use. This engine was also fitted to a face-lifted Audi 80 (all 80 and 90 models were now badged 80 except for the USA), giving this model a choice of 4, 5 and 6 cylinder engines, in sedan, coupe and cabriolet body styles. 34 Squadron RAAF (which also operates a number of smaller VIP aircraft), based at Fairbairn Airbase, Canberra. With the introduction of an all-new Audi 100 in 1992, Audi introduced a 2.8l V6 engine. The planes are operated by the No. Although the five cylinder engine was a successful and very robust powerplant, it was still a little too different for the target market. The aircraft are also made available to the British royal family (who are considered Australian Royals when in Australia), and were recently utilized by Prince Charles in 2005. There was also a coupe version of the 80/90 with both 4 and 5 cylinder engines. The Prime Minister regularly uses the jets for both domestic and international travel. By 1991, Audi had the 4 cylinder Audi 80, the 5 cylinder Audi 90 and Audi 100, the turbocharged Audi 200 and the Audi V8. The two planes also had a range capability more than that of other Boeing Business Jets. Most obvious was the new grille that was now incorprated in the bonnet. In 2002, the Royal Australian Air Force acquired two new Boeing Business Jets fitted with facilities such as conference tables, offices suites, secure satellite and communication capabilities for use by Australian officials, especially the Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Governor-General. It was essentially a new engine fitted to the Audi 100/200, but with noticeable bodywork differences. [1]. This began with the release of the Audi V8 in 1990. In the meantime, two chartered Boeing 747s operated by Aerolineas Argentinas currently serve the Presidential transport role. Through the early 1990's, Audi began to move more towards the position of being a real competitor in it's target market against Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Tango-01, however, experienced engine trouble over Israel and is currently stranded in that nation. This range of engine capacity was a good combination of good fuel economy which was on the mind of every motorist in the 1980's, and a good amount of power the customer wants. Before 1990, there were engines produced with a displacement between 2.0 L and 2.3 L. The 2.1 L inline 5 cylinder engine was used as a base for the rally cars in the 1980's, providing well over 400 horsepower (298 kW) after modification. This group is known as Agrupación Aérea Presidencial (Presidential Air Group), and belongs to the Argentine Air Force, but comes under the administration of the Casa Militar ("Military House"), the department responsible for Presidential security and transportation. This engine was used in not only production cars but also their race cars. Argentina operates a small fleet of aircraft and helicopters for the use of the President, family, and senior government officials. In the 1980s, Audi was the champion of the inline 5 cylinder, 2.1/2.2 L engine as a longer lasting alternative to more traditional 6 cylinder engines. No other mode of transportation for government executives is as well-known as Air Force One; most nations, even industrialized ones, do not maintain a separate aircraft for heads of state and government, although most have a military "VIP fleet" that provides aircraft when senior government officials must travel. Today, after many decades of class-leading technology and engineering, the name quattro is an identifiable symbol and trademark that shows would-be competitors the level of quality they have to achieve in order to attempt to compete with Audi. on board the plane. Although Porsche and Mercedes-Benz offer all-wheel drive systems in some cars today, neither manufacturer was able to ride the fad and come out on top like Audi has. In the book Deception Point by Dan Brown, Air Force One is described from the exterior and a number of miscellaneous facts are mentioned and one of the main characters meets the President of the U.S. The system also was not popular in Porsche vehicles because owners wanted the traditional performance of the rear wheel drive they got used to in older Porsches. These shoes have become popular hip hop icons, and have even been the focus of a 2002 rap song by rapper Nelly aptly titled "Air Force Ones.". Unfortunately, the all-wheel drive system in the Mercedes-Benz vehicles were riddled with problems right from the design sheet. In fashion, the term "Air Force Ones" is used to describe a particular all-white shoe that has been sold by Nike since the 1980s. In the 1980's, all-wheel drive systems in cars became a fad, and other manufacturers like Porsche and Mercedes-Benz offered all-wheel drive systems in their cars to compete in the marketplace. Union Pacific 4141 is an EMD SD70ACe locomotive with a paint scheme based on that of Air Force One. In the 1970's, some vehicle manufacturers including Audi (and Subaru) designed their own all wheel drive systems in passenger vehicles. In the Christian fiction series Left Behind, President Gerald Fitzhugh donates Air Force One to UN Secretary-General Nicolae Carpathia and christens it Global Community One (The Global Community being the name of Nicolae Carpathia's proposed One World Government). The all-aluminium concept was extended to the company's new sub-compact, the Audi A2 which was launched in 2001. The plane shown in the FMV's looks more like a Boeing 707 with a noticeably higher fuselage profile or the Airbus Beluga than the Boeing 747. Audi introduced a new series of vehicles in the mid-nineties and continues to pursue leading-edge technology and high performance. A stage of the arcade game Ghost Squad has the players retake "Air Force One" from a terrorist group. An all-aluminium car was brought forward by Audi, and in 1994 the Audi A8 was launched, which introduced aluminium space frame technology. Further, in the film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the chancellor of the Klingon Empire is carried on a ship called Qo'noS One (pronounced as 'Kronos' - Qo'noS being the name of the Klingon homeworld). Audi is the only car manufacturer that produces 100% galvanized vehicles to prevent corrosion. In both series, presidents take the oath of office in a scene closely modeled after the swearing in of Lyndon Johnson. Its first race will likely be the 2006 12 Hours of Sebring as a race-test for the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans. Similarly, in the TV series Babylon 5, the President's ship bears the call sign Earth Force One. the R10 employs many new features, including a twin-turbocharged diesel engine. The interior and role of the ship were heavily influenced by Air Force One. This also ends the long era of the R8, however its replacement for 2006, called the Audi R10, was unveiled on December 13, 2005. The starship of Colonial President Laura Roslin in the Sci Fi Channel TV series Battlestar Galactica bore the call sign Colonial Heavy 798 until Roslin succeeded President Adar after he was killed in the Cylon attack, at which point it was renamed Colonial One. The Champion team was also the first American team to win Le Mans since the Gulf Ford GT's in 1967. In Anthony Horowitz's novel Eagle Strike, the teenage spy Alex Rider is trapped inside the hijacked Air Force One, providing the reader a description of the plane's interior. But with a team of excellent drivers and experience, both Champion R8s were able to take first and third while the ORECA team took fourth. After the plane crash lands on Victoria Island, the player must once again rescue the president from enemy forces, encountering portions of the aircraft and furniture thrown from the impact along the way. On average, the R8s were about 2-3 seconds off pace compared to the Pescarolo-Judd. Then they have to protect the President and get him to the escape pod when aliens conspiring with NSA personnel invade the aircraft mid-flight via a troopship. The R8s (which were built to old LMP900 regulations) received a more narrow air inlet restrictor, cutting power, and an additional 50 kg of weight compared to the newer LMP1 chassis. First they have to sneak aboard the plane at an Alaskan Air Force base. At the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans, Champion Racing entered two R8s along with an R8 from the Audi PlayStation Team Oreca. The player, a secret agent, must attempt to stop the kidnapping of the President during these missions. Audi returned to the winner's circle at the 2004 race, with the top three finishers all driving R8s: Audi Sport Japan Team Goh finished first, Audi Sport UK Veloqx second, and Champion Racing third. Three missions of the Nintendo 64 video game Perfect Dark involve a futuristic Air Force One, and once again featured the escape pod. In 2003, two Bentley Speed 8s, with engines designed by Audi and driven by Joest drivers loaned to the fellow VW company, competed in the GTP class and finished the race in the top two positions, while the Champion Racing R8 finished third overall and first in the LMP900 class. Air Force One has been featured in other films (Independence Day, Superman, and Escape from New York, which also featured the unconfirmable escape pod), books (The President's Plane is Missing), and TV series (The West Wing, Commander in Chief, 24 and NCIS). Audi also sold the car to customer teams such as Champion Racing. The film was noted for its fancifully exaggerated depiction of the plane's capabilities; for example, the real Air Force One does not officially carry an escape capsule, though this cannot be refuted since the exact specifications of the aircraft are classified at the highest level. The factory supported Joest Racing team won at Le Mans three times in a row (2000 - 2002), as well as winning every race in the American Le Mans Series in its first year. In the film, Russian terrorists hijack Air Force One and hold the President and other passengers hostage. Beginning in 1999, Audi built the Audi R8 to compete in sports car racing, including the LMP900 class at the 24 hours of Le Mans. Air Force One has often been featured in popular culture and fiction, most notably in the 1997 action movie Air Force One, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Wolfgang Petersen. After 4 victories in a row, the Audis were sanctioned with several negative changes that deeply affected the car's performance, although Champion Audi would still manage to win the 2004 championship. Air Force One is a prominent symbol of the presidency and its power; after the White House, it is probably the most recognized Presidential institution. They returned in 2004 to defend their title but a newcomer, Cadillac, gave them a run for their money. New aircraft to fulfill the role of Air Force One may be acquired as soon as 2010, when the current 747s will be 20 years old. Once again, the quattro was superior and Champion Audi won the championship. Kennedy is on display at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. In the US, Champion Audi racing entered an Audi RS6 in the 2003 speedvision GT challenge, competing against Corvettes, Vipers, and smaller, more agile BMWs. A Douglas VC-118A Liftmaster used by John F. In 2004 Audi returned to touring car racing by entering two factory supported Joest Racing A4s in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters series. The Air Force One Pavilion was opened to the public on October 24, 2005. The quattro system would eventually be banned in 1998 by the FIA. The jet is part of a museum of presidential travel, located at this location. they then switched to DTM with the Audi V8, then they turned their attention to the Super Touring. The Boeing 707 that served as Air Force One during the 1980s (SAM 27000) is on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. In 1989, Audi moved to IMSA GTO with the 90, however as they avoided the two major endurance events (Daytona and Sebring) despite winning on a regular basis, they would lose out on the title. Aircraft which have formerly served as Air Force One are on display in the Presidential Hangar of the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio (Sacred Cow, Independence, Columbine III, SAM 26000, and other smaller Presidential aircraft), as well as the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington (earlier VC-137B). As Audi moved away from rallying and into circuit racing, they chose first into America with the Trans-Am in 1988,. Department of Justice said that the plan was enacted because there was evidence "that the White House and Air Force One were targets.". This Audi S1 started the S-series of cars for Audi which now represents an increased level of sports options and quality to the Audi line up. The following day, officials at the White House and the U.S. The Audi S1 enjoys a 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 2.3 s. Instead of returning to Washington, the Secret Service ordered Air Force One to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana, and then to the former Strategic Air Command (now United States Strategic Command) headquarters at Offut AFB in Nebraska, before returning to Washington. All of Audi's top drivers drove this beast, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Walter Röhrl and the female driver, Michèle Mouton. Bush from Sarasota, Florida, where he was interrupted at an education event because of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The engine was mated to a 6-speed gearbox and ran on Audi's famous all-wheel drive system. One of the most dramatic episodes aboard Air Force One happened on September 11, 2001, when it flew President George W. The Audi S1 employed Audi's time-tested 5-cylinder turbo charged engine and generated over 600 hp (447 kW). Bush to Iraq to spend Thanksgiving with troops stationed there,1 though White House officials later denied this.2. In 1987, Walter Röhrl claimed the title for Audi setting a new record of 10:47.85 in his Audi S1 he retired from the WRC in 2 years earlier. In November 2003, there was a minor controversy when Air Force One's crew lied to the crew of a passing British Airways jet, informing them that the 416-ton 747 was a 45-ton Gulfstream V corporate jet, while transporting George W. Bobby Unser used an Audi in that same year to claim a new record for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb at 11:09.22. Bush was noted for going to the plane's pressroom to talk to reporters far less than his predecessors. Joaquim Santos avoided hitting spectators on one side of the road, and ended up hitting spectators on the other side. Bush added a treadmill to Air Force One. In 1986, Audi formally left international rally racing following the death in Portugal of driver Joaquim Santos in his RS200. President George W. The climb race pits a driver and car to drive up a 4,302 meter high mountain in Colorado and in 1985, Michèle Mouton set a new record of 11:25.39 and being the first woman to set a Pikes Peak record. In 1987, Reagan flew on SAM 27000 to Berlin and made his famous "Tear down this wall!" speech. Michèle Mouton, the first female WRC driver to win a championship and a driver for Audi, took the Sport Quattro S1, now simply called the S1 and raced in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Former secretary of state Henry Kissinger was also on board. Audi also received rally honors in the Hong Kong to Beijing rally in that same year. Instead, President Reagan sent Secretary of State Alexander Haig and the living former presidents—Nixon, Ford, and Carter—to the funeral. After another season mired in mediocre finishes, Walter Röhrl finished the season in his Sport Quattro S1 and helped place Audi second in the manufacturer's points. Because of security concerns, Reagan did not attend the funeral, nor did then-Vice President Bush. In 1984 Audi launched the "Sport Quattro" car which dominated races in Monte Carlo and Sweden with Audi taking all podium finishes but succumbed to problems further into World Rally Championship contention. On October 6, 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated. It won competition after competition for the next two years. Bush. Many critics doubted the viability of all-wheel-drive racers, thinking them to be too heavy and complex, yet the Quattro was an instant success, winning its first rally on its first outing. W. It is considered one of the most significant rally cars of all time because it was one of the first to take advantage of the then-recently changed rules which allowed the use of all-wheel-drive in competition racing. The aircraft was delivered in 1990, during the administration of George H. In 1980 Audi released the Quattro, an all wheel drive turbocharged car that went on to win rallies and races worldwide. Most of the interior was completed in Wichita, Kansas. In the 1990s Audi dominated the Touring and Super Touring categories of motor racing after success in circuit racing Stateside. Ronald Reagan's two terms as President saw no major changes to Air Force One but the fabrication of the current 747s began. Audi's rich tradition in motorsport began with the Auto Union in the 1930s. Bush until it was replaced by the 747's in 1990. Audi has competed in (and sometimes dominated) numerous forms of auto racing. Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. However, after 2003, with the release of the new A4, and in 2004 with the new A6, Audi's dedication to quality had finally paid off when it started to receive news reports and various vehicle critics praising Audis over Mercedes-Benz and BMW. It began service under Nixon and served Gerald R. Though its brand still doesn't have the global cachet of Mercedes-Benz or BMW, Audi's reputation for quality and understated style has once again made it a highly desirable marque. SAM 27000 was the primary presidential aircraft for more presidents than any other. In March of 2005, Audi is building its first two dealerships in India following its high increase in sales in that region. It was President Ford who first decided that the name of the aircraft itself should be Air Force One, along with the call sign. The largest sales increases came from Eastern Europe (+19.3%), Africa (+17.2%) and the Middle East (+58.5%). Nixon resigned the presidency and departed from Andrews AFB on Air Force One, it was arranged that the plane's call sign would switch from Air Force One to SAM designation (SAM 27000). Record figures were recorded from 21 out of about 50 major sales markets. In 1974, when Richard M. 2004 marked the 11th straight increase in sales, selling 779,441 vehicles worldwide. President Nixon dubbed the presidential airliner The Spirit of 1976, in recognition of the upcoming American bicentennial. Currently, Audi's sales are growing strongly in Europe, and the company is renowned for having the best build quality of any mainstream auto manufacturer. The role SAM 26000 played during the funeral made several points clear:. The turning point for Audi was the sale of the new A4 in 1996, and with the release of the A4/6/8 series, which was developed together with VW and other sister brands (so called "platforms"). He also escorted her during the state funeral, also at her request. Audi had contemplated withdrawing from the American market until sales began to recover in the mid-1990s. As the former president was laid to rest at his ranch, retired Brigadier General James Cross, pilot of SAM 26000 in Johnson's day, turned over the flag to his wife, Lady Bird, at her request. The report immediately crushed Audi sales, and Audi renamed the affected model (The 5000 became the 100/200 in 1989, as in Germany and elsewhere). After the funeral, SAM 26000 brought his body on one final journey home, back to Texas for his burial, landing at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, the airfield Johnson flew into and out of when president. 60 Minutes ignored this fact and rigged a car to perform in an uncontrolled manner. Two days later, SAM 26000 brought the former president's body to Washington, coming from Texas for the state funeral the following day. This was never an issue in Europe, as Europeans in general use manual transmission gears, and have a "feeling" for vehicle revs in comparison to the speed of the car. On January 22, 1973, LBJ died. US citizens are used to automatic gearboxes and only two well separated pedals). Later in 1972, SAM 26000 became the backup aircraft when another 707, SAM 27000, arrived. (In race cars, when manually downshifting under heavy braking, the accelerator has to be used in order to match revs properly, so both pedals have to be close to each other to be operated by the right foot at once, toes on the brake, heels on the gas. SAM 26000 also carried President Richard Nixon on his historic trips to mainland China and to Russia in 1972. Independent investigators concluded that this was most likely due to a close placement of the accelerator and brake pedals (unlike American cars), and the inability, when not paying attention, to distinguish between the two. SAM 26000 flew over Arlington National Cemetery as Kennedy was being laid to rest. The 60 Minutes report was based on customer reports of acceleration when the brake pedal was pushed. Johnson took the oath of office, and the plane carried Kennedy's body back to Washington. This decline in sales was not helped in the USA by a 60 Minutes report which purported to show that Audi automobiles suffered from "unintended acceleration". It was on the plane (while it was at Love Field) that Vice President Lyndon B. In the early nineties, sales began to slump for the Audi 80 series, and some basic construction problems started to surface. Kennedy to Dallas, Texas, where early that afternoon he was assassinated. However, its modern and dynamic exterior belied the low performance of its base engine, and its base package was quite spartan (even the passenger-side mirror was an option.) In 1987, Audi put forward a new and very elegant Audi 90, which had a much superior set of standard features. On November 22, 1963, SAM 26000 carried President John F. This completely new development sold extremely well. A month earlier, it broke 30 speed records when carrying a delegation to Moscow, including the fastest non-stop flight between Washington and Moscow. In 1986, as the Passat-based Audi 80 was beginning to develop a kind of "grandfather's car" image, the type 89 was introduced. In late June 1963, Kennedy flew on SAM 26000 to Berlin, where he made his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, and to Ireland. Prominent wins proved the viability of all-wheel drive racecars, and the Audi name became associated with advances in automotive technology,. Because the aircraft would be solely for the use of the president, Kennedy asked that the Presidential seal be added to both sides of the nose. Commonly referred to as the "Ur-Quattro" (the "Ur-" prefix is a German augmentative used, in this case, to mean "original" and is also applied to the first generation of Audi's S4 and S6 sport sedans, as in "UrS4" and "UrS6"), few of these vehicles were produced (all hand-built by a single team) but the model was a great success in rallying. flag painted on the tail. The performance car was named the "Quattro," a turbocharged coupé which was also the first production vehicle to feature full-time all-wheel drive through a center differential. Loewy came up with a powder blue and white design, the same colors used today; he also had the words "United States of America" put on the fuselage's side and the U.S. The Audi image at this time was a conservative one, and so, a proposal from chassis engineer Jorg Bensinger was accepted to develop the four-wheel drive technology in Volkswagen's Iltis military vehicle for an Audi performance car and rally racing car. He also commissioned industrial designer Raymond Loewy to create a distinctive exterior for the plane. This was soon joined by the Audi 80/Fox (which formed the basis for the 1973 Volkswagen Passat) in 1972. In 1962, he added a modified, long-range 707 to the fleet—Special Air Missions (SAM) 26000. The first Audi of the modern era was the Audi 100 of 1968. Kennedy, presidential air travel officially entered the jet age. However, Volkswagen took the K70 for its own range, spelling the end of NSU as a separate brand. With John F. The mid-sized car that NSU had been working on, the K70, was intended to slot between the rear-engined Prinz models and the futuristic Ro 80. Towards the end of Eisenhower's term, in 1958, the Air Force added three Boeing 707 jets into the fleet. Presently several lines of Audi cars are produced in Neckarsulm. President Eisenhower also upgraded Air Force One's technology by adding an air-to-ground telephone and an air-to-ground teletype machine. In 1967, the new NSU Ro 80 was a space-age car well ahead of its time in technical details such as aerodynamics, light weight, safety, et cetera, but teething problems with the rotary engines put an end to the independence of NSU. These planes were named Columbine II and Columbine III by Mamie Eisenhower after the official state flower of Colorado, her adopted home state. NSU then focused on new rotary engines according to the ideas of Felix Wankel. Eisenhower also introduced two other propeller aircraft, the Lockheed C-121 Constellations (VC-121E) to Presidential service. In the 1950s NSU had been the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles but had moved on to produce small cars like the NSU Prinz (the TT and TTS versions are still popular as vintage race cars). The planes accidentally entered the same airspace, and after the incident the unique call sign "Air Force One" was made for the presidential aircraft. In 1969, Audi merged with NSU, based in Neckarsulm near Stuttgart. The change stemmed from a 1953 incident where an Eastern Airlines commercial flight (8610) had the same call sign as a flight the President was on (Air Force 8610). Today, aircooled powerplants once produced by VW are no longer placed into production vehicles since December 23, 2005. Eisenhower, the first American president to have been a pilot in his own right. Daimler-Benz sold the company to Volkswagen in 1964; subsequently, Volkswagen's purchase of Auto Union has led to the modernization of VW to which it gained expertise in manufacturing water-cooled vehicles. The call signs were established for security purposes during the administration of Dwight D. This model appeared in September 1965, "relaunching" the Audi brand. This was the first aircraft acting as Air Force One that had a distinctive exterior (an eagle head painted on its nose). Daimler-Benz developed a 72 hp (54 kW) four-door sedan, with a modern four stroke engine driving the front wheels. He replaced the C-54 with a modified C-118 Liftmaster, calling it the Independence, possibly in reference to President Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri. In 1958, Daimler-Benz acquired 88 per cent of Auto Union and the next year became its sole owner. Truman became President. The company focused efforts on the DKW brand, but their two-stroke engines became unpopular. After Roosevelt died in spring 1945, Vice President Harry S. In that period, the four interlinked rings were used together with the DKW badge. Eleanor Roosevelt use it instead. After the war, Zwickau soon became part of the German Democratic Republic and Audi headquarters were moved to Ingolstadt. The Secret Service, not wishing to waste resources, instead put the C-87A plane to use by having Mrs. Auto Union plants were heavily bombed and partly destroyed during World War II. It carried the president to several important events, most notably the Yalta Conference. The technological development became more and more concentrated and some Audi models were propelled by Horch or Wanderer built engines. This plane was nicknamed the Sacred Cow and included a sleeping area, radio telephone, and retractable elevator for Roosevelt's wheelchair. This badge was used, however, only on Auto Union racing cars in that period while the member companies used their own names and emblems. However, the plane was no longer used for Roosevelt after another C-87A crashed; the Secret Service reconfigured a C-54 Skymaster as a replacement. Before World War II, Auto Union used the four interlinked rings that make up the Audi badge today, representing these four brands. This plane was called Guess Where Two. In 1932 Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer to form the Auto Union. The first aircraft officially designated for Presidential flight was the C-87A Liberator Express, a reconfigured B-24 bomber. Audi cars of that era were luxurious cars equipped with special bodywork. The continuing threat from the submarines established air travel as a usual means of distance transportation for the President. At the same time, six cylinder and a small four cylinder (licensed from Peugeot) models were manufactured. The main reason at the time for presidential air travel was the threat of the German Navy's U-boats in the Atlantic. These engines were used in Audi Zwickau and Audi Dresden models that were launched in 1929. Roosevelt, who traveled on a Boeing 314 "flying boat" aircraft to a 1943 conference in Casablanca on the progress of World War II. In 1928, the company was acquired by J S Rasmussen, owner of DKW, who bought the same year the remains of the US automobile manufacturer, Rickenbacker including the manufacturing equipment for eight cylinder engines. The first president to fly in an airplane while in office was Franklin D. The first six cylinder model (4655 cc) appeared in 1924. In the 1940s and 1950s, however, air travel became much more convenient. August Horch left the Audi company in 1920. Lack of telecommunications and quick transportation made long-distance travel impractical, as it took up much time and isolated the President from events in Washington. These cars were successful even in sporting events. Prior to World War II, overseas and cross-country presidential travel was rare. Audi started with a 2612 cc model followed by a four cylinder model with 3564 cc, as well as 4680 cc and 5720 cc models. Many of Air Force One's other capabilities are classified for security reasons. Audi produces over 2 million vehicles annually at its main production site in Ingolstadt. The planes also have electronic countermeasures (ECMs) to jam enemy radar and flares to avoid heat-seeking missiles. It is also popularly believed that Audi is an acronym which stands for "Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt". All wiring is covered with heavy shielding for protection from an electromagnetic pulse in the event of a nuclear attack. As the word "horch!" translates to "listen!" in German, August Horch settled on the Latin equivalent of his name - "audi!". The electronics on board are connected with approximately 238 miles (383 km) of wiring, twice that of a regular 747. August Horch was forced to refrain from using his own family name in his new car business. Operational modifications include aerial refueling capability and anti-aircraft missile countermeasures. His former partners sued him for trademark infringement and a German court determined that the Horch brand belonged to his former company. The planes can also be operated as a military command center in the event of an incident such as a nuclear attack. He then started a new company in Zwickau and continued using the Horch brand. Most of the furniture on board was hand-crafted by master carpenters. In 1910, Horch was forced out of the company he had founded. There are also secure and non-secure voice, fax, and data communications. The first Horch automobile was produced in 1901 in Zwickau, in former East Germany. In the office areas, Air Force One features access to photocopying, printing, and word processing services, as well as telecommunication systems (including 85 telephones and 19 televisions). The company traces its origins back to 1899 and August Horch. Whenever Air Force One rolls up to an event, it always comes to a stop with the port side of the aircraft facing gathered onlookers as a security measure to keep the President's side of the aircraft out of view. . These offices, including the president's suite, are mostly located on the starboard, and a long corridor runs along the port. The tagline is used either in original or in its English translation "Advantage through Technology". In addition, there are separate sleeping quarters for guests, senior staff, Secret Service and security personnel, and the news media; the president's executive suite includes a private dressing room, workout room, lavatory, shower, and private office. Audi's German tagline is "Vorsprung durch Technik". On every flight there is a staff doctor. The company is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. On board Air Force One are medical facilities, including a fold-out operating table, emergency medical supplies, and a well-stocked pharmacy. Audi is an automobile maker in Germany, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. Writer Tom Harris notes:. Audi Roadjet. There are three entrances onboard. Audi Le Mans Quattro.
